4.4 Philosophy and Origin of the Anatomy Tool

As an executive speaker coach and senior TEDx coach, I have developed this method by watching TEDx talks and what makes up a good talk or a bad talk. I like to work with templates that give a formula or method on how to do something. I put together the pieces of the Anatomy of a Brilliant Speech to help the TEDx speakers to tell their stories in interesting and engaging ways.

I have had the honor of working with TEDx visionary speakers such as the Prime Minister of Aruba, a supermodel, a civil rights activist, scientists, professors, poets, engineers, entertainers and top executives from Fortune 500 companies. I have used this Anatomy document with ALL of them and you can see it in their talks. By working with so many different kinds of speakers, I have been able to modify and improve this tool with every speaker.

I have ADHD also - and this makes me a good speaker coach - I start to squirm and move around in my seat and get uncomfortable - because if you don't keep my attention (read IF YOU ARE BORING), I will not stay engaged with what you are telling me. This goes for many people in your audience - online or in person!

You have to grab your audience (opening WOW), tell about yourself, only 3 main points, have a call to action and don't forget the closing WOW statement. All these things made sense to me and I just put them together in a format that all the speakers I worked with could relate to.

Once you get familiar with the parts of the document, you will begin to see them (or consciously NOT see them) in other people's presentations.

As you go through this course, I invite you to watch some TEDx talks on YouTube. But watch with different eyes. People have told me that once they have learned how to use the Anatomy document, they see things in a different way!

One of my clients named Stephanie texted me and put it like this:

"I'm listening to an academic talk on elephant poaching and it is the most boring thing I've ever heard - not because I'm any better, but because you taught me to notice!"

I will add some links to speakers I have coached in another section to show you how each element works.
